The Congress, on the other hand, grew from 42 seats in 2019 to 92 in 2024. The NDA won a total of 282 such seats and the Opposition INDIA alliance 226.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP had won 303 seats in a commanding victory, it had won 224 of them with more than 50% of the vote share. This time, not only did the BJP fall short of an outright majority, getting 240 seats, it won only 156 of them with more than 50% vote share.
Before Tuesday, the INDIA bloc kept talking about how the 2024 results would prove to be an ‘India Shining’ moment for the BJP, referring to how the Vajpayee government had been taken by surprise by the 2004 numbers after advancing general elections in the anticipation of a win.
AS THE BJP hopes to retain its dominance in the Lok Sabha results Tuesday, one crucial detail will be if it can match the performance of 2019, when it won 224 of its 303 seats (nearly two-thirds) with more than 50% of the vote share.
