Three days from now, we will finally know how close the BJP or NDA finishes to its touted seat target of “400 paar”. In India’s electoral history, a party has crossed that number only once, when the Congress won 414 seats (of the 541 that voted) in the Lok Sabha elections that followed Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
Finally, as the Lok Sabha elections draw to a close on Saturday, 43 days after the first phase on April 19, all eyes will shift to the exit polls which will start emerging soon after the voting period officially ends.
After almost 80 days of campaigning, voting in the Lok Sabha elections concludes on Saturday with 57 seats across eight states and Union Territories going to polls. This has been the second-longest parliamentary election since the first Lok Sabha election in 1951-’52.
The Lok Sabha elections so far have seen a 1.55 percentage-point decrease in turnout compared to 2019, with 65% of the constituencies seeing a dip in turnout in percentage points and 20% of them witnessing a decrease in absolute numbers of voters as well.
With the finish line of the Lok Sabha polls in sight, the sixth and penultimate phase will see 58 seats across eight states and Union Territories (UTs) vote on Saturday. By the end of this phase, a total of 486 of the 543 Lok Sabha seats will have completed polling, with just 57 seats left for the seventh phase. On Saturday, all 10 seats in Haryana, the seven seats in Delhi and the final of the five seats in Jammu and Kashmir (voting in Anantnag-Rajouri was moved from the third to the sixth phase) will finish voting.
Attacking the Congress and its first family as the ancien régime, vikas and vishwaguru, and holding out the promise of Viksit Bharat by 2047: These themes have been a refrain in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speeches since the elections were notified on March 16. After the release of the Congress manifesto on April 5, the rhetoric swerved towards Hindu-Muslim issues and the idea of wealth redistribution and religion-based reservation at the expense of SC/STs and OBCs.
With 49 seats across 8 states and Union Territories voting in the Lok Sabha polls in the fifth phase on Monday, a total of 428 seats will have completed polling, leaving 115 seats in the remaining two phases. At the end of this phase, Maharashtra will have completed polling with its last 13 seats, including all six in Mumbai, voting.
Four down, three to go. We are officially in the second half of the Lok Sabha elections as 96 constituencies in 10 states and Union Territories vote in the fourth phase. As in the first three phases, our eyes will peeled on, among other things, the turnout figures.
