Kicking off the second half of the Lok Sabha elections, 96 constituencies in 10 states and Union Territories (UTs) will go to polls on Monday.
In the third phase of voting for the Lok Sabha elections, 93 seats across 12 states and UTs will go to polls on Tuesday. After Phase 3, a total of 283 seats would have completed polling. In Phase 3, five states will complete polling – Assam, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Karnataka and Gujarat, where the BJP candidate in Surat has already won unopposed after other candidates’ nominations were rejected or withdrawn.
After much suspense, the Congress finally announced its candidates for the traditional Nehru-Gandhi seats of Amethi and Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh on Friday, the list date for filing nominations. While there was buzz that siblings Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi would contest from the two seats, eventually while Rahul moved to Rae Bareli, Priyanka opted out.
In the second phase of voting for the Lok Sabha elections, 89 seats across 12 states and UTs will go to polls on Friday. By the end of the day, a third of the total 543 Lok Sabha seats — including all the seats in Kerala, Rajasthan, Manipur and Tripura, and 14 of the 28 seats in Karnataka — will have completed polling. In Outer Manipur, 13 Assembly segments are voting in the second phase; the remaining 15 had voted in the first phase along with the Inner Manipur seat.
With a month-and-a-half to go for the results of the Lok Sabha polls to be announced on June 4, the BJP has already won its first seat. On Monday, a day after the nomination of the Congress candidate from Surat was rejected, the BJP’s Mukesh Dalal was declared elected uncontested from the Lok Sabha seat, after the eight remaining nominees withdrew.
After months of build-up, the Lok Sabha polls get underway on Friday, with 102 seats spread across 21 states voting. Eleven states and Union Territories will complete polling by the end of Friday, including all 39 seats in Tamil Nadu, all five seats in Uttarakhand, 12 constituencies in Rajasthan, five in Maharashtra, and all seats in six Northeastern states and three UTs. The Assemblies in Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are also going to polls. Of the 102 seats, 18 are reserved for Scheduled Castes and 11 for Scheduled Tribes.
Tamil Nadu will be the first major state to complete polling, with all its 39 Lok Sabha seats voting in the first phase on April 19. In recent weeks, the BJP has led a considerable campaign effort in the state, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting multiple times since the election schedule was announced. Even if the fight remains centred on the DMK and AIADMK, the BJP will look to gain in terms of vote share and pick up some seats.
As the election season heats up, India’s weather won’t be far behind. Earlier this week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast a harsh and arid summer over a majority of the country, from April to June, with a high probability of heat wave episodes lasting as long as 10 to 20 days in this period – coinciding with polling for the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled from April 19 to June 1.
