After its Lok Sabha election tally was halved and its 58% vote share came down to 46% in a massive reversal, the BJP in Haryana has started making attempts to placate voters and make up the lost ground before the Assembly elections in a few months.
With the Rajya Sabha (RS) secretariat notifying vacancies in 10 seats from seven states, whose members got elected to the Lok Sabha in the recent general elections, the ruling BJP-led NDA and the Opposition INDIA alliance are set for another round of fight, especially in Maharashtra and Haryana.
From winning all the 10 seats in 2019 down to five, the BJP’s Haryana setback in the Lok Sabha polls has shocked many. These numbers are crucial because they could have a bearing on the state’s Assembly polls scheduled for October.
SET TO win five of the 10 Lok Sabha seats in Haryana Saturday — a turnaround from 2019 when the BJP swept the state — former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who is also the Leader of Opposition in the Haryana Assembly, told The Indian Express that the results were an “indication” of where the wind will blow in the state’s Assembly polls scheduled for October. The BJP, which had won seven of the 10 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 and swept Haryana in 2019, is heading for a rout in the state with consistent leads only in two seats.
In Haryana, which voted in the parliamentary elections on Saturday and, crucially, will see an Assembly election later this year, caste is as entrenched a feature of politics as in the other Hindi heartland states.
Five years ago, the BJP had a clean sweep in Haryana, winning all its 10 Lok Sabha seats, including eight with huge margins. But come Saturday, the party is likely to face an uphill task maintaining its tally – or worse, minimising its losses – due to multiple events since 2019.
Seen as former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s bastion, which his son Deepender lost by a narrow margin in 2019, the Rohtak Lok Sabha constituency this time has emerged as the Congress’s “safest bet” in the state even as sitting BJP MP Arvind Sharma dismisses the Opposition’s claims as “merely a perception created by the Hoodas”.
