The BJP is well on its way to returning to power in Arunachal Pradesh with even more commanding numbers than in the last Assembly, with wins in 42 seats and leads in another four in the elections to the 60-member House.
The results for 50 of the 60 seats in the Arunachal Pradesh Assembly will be announced on Sunday, in a state where 10 seats have already gone uncontested to BJP candidates.
With the remaining four of Assam’s 14 Lok Sabha seats voting in the third phase on Tuesday, polling will come to a close in the state. The seats where polling will be held on Tuesday are Barpeta, Dhubri, Guwahati, and Kokrajhar.
In the Chenga area of Assam’s Barpeta district, the set of Lok Sabha candidates shown on election posters can change completely from one village to the next. In Sutiyapara village, posters plastered on houses, shops and walls are of candidates for the Barpeta Lok Sabha seat. But upon entering the next village, Kakdhowa, the posters are for the Dhubri constituency candidates. Go a little further to Hila Bazar, and the Barpeta candidates’ posters can be seen again.
Five constituencies in central Assam and the Barak Valley will go to polls on Friday, with the balance of demography expected to play a key role in the outcome. Several of the constituencies of Nagaon, Diphu, Darrang-Udalguri, Silchar, and Karimganj have undergone significant changes in last year’s delimitation exercise.
When Silchar in Assam was submerged under a devastating flood in June 2022, Nikhil Das, 36, and his family spent 25 days on the tin roof of their kutcha house. He points to a bridge that was built later that year, over the ponds skirting his house that they earlier used to wade through to reach home. Flagging it as an example of “development”, he says this is one of the reasons for his support to the BJP.
The days running up to polling day in Karimganj look a little different this time, says Shahuddin, 35, who runs a tea shop in Bhanga, halfway between Karimganj town and Silchar. Every evening, he has people gathering at his small tea shop for vigorous discussion on the elections and whom they should vote for – unusual for parliamentary elections, he says.
