The Sambalpur Lok Sabha constituency in Odisha is gearing up for a high-profile contest after the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Wednesday announced its first list of candidates and fielded its organisational secretary and sitting Jajpur MLA, Pranab Prakash Das against Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan, who is the BJP’s pick for the seat.

Like in 2019, the simultaneous elections in Odisha this time will be held in four phases, with the only difference this time being that the state will vote in the last four of the seven phases, unlike last time when it voted in the first four phases.
With a slew of promises mentioned in the manifesto for Odisha, the Congress, looking to revive its base in the state, has moulded its poll message around the welfare narrative. On Friday, the party released its manifesto for the Odisha Assembly polls, choosing to replicate the templates it followed in Karnataka and Telangana, where it won the Assembly polls last year. The promises indicate how the party is planning to counter the BJD’s narrative on welfare initiatives by targeting the constituency of voters who form the bedrock of the ruling party’s electoral success.
The seat-sharing talks between the BJD and BJP continue to hang, with sources talking of hard bargaining on both sides, especially over Assembly seats, with the state seeing simultaneous elections along with the Lok Sabha.
