The Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) has proved to be a game-changer for the BJP-led NDA in Bihar. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who was being written off ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, has returned to the centre stage of national politics, with his party bagging 12 seats out of the 16 it contested in Bihar. With the BJP falling short of the simple majority mark of 272, it will have to lean heavily on its NDA partners, especially key allies like the JD(U) and the TDP, to steer its government at the Centre. While the incumbent BJP-led NDA maintained its supremacy in Bihar in the Lok Sabha polls by winning 30 seats out of 40 as against the INDIA bloc’s 9 seats, it was beaten by the Opposition alliance in Uttar Pradesh, the most crucial heartland state.
JD(U) advisor and party’s national spokesperson K C Tyagi on Friday said that the same INDIA bloc that had “refused” to make party supremo and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar its national convenor, “has been now making offers to make Nitish PM”. Tyagi added they had rejected the offer outright and were strongly with the NDA.
In 1989, when the Indian People’s Front (IPF), which later became the CPI(M-L) Liberation, put up its best electoral performance ever and won two Lok Sabha seats, Bihar’s Arrah was one of them, then won by Rameshwar Prasad.
Second only to the Telugu Desam Party in its heft in the NDA, Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) plans to leverage the 12 seats it has won to negotiate plum portfolios in the cabinet, including the coveted Railways ministry, it is learnt.
HAVING ended without a seat in 2019, the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) recovered to four constituencies in Bihar this time, with the INDIA bloc’s tally in the state growing to nine.
While the NDA in Bihar maintained its supremacy in the Lok Sabha polls by winning 30 seats out of 40, the INDIA bloc managed to win 9 seats in the crucial heartland state as compared to just one seat that the Opposition alliance had won in the 2019 polls.
