WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden has been facing calls from congressional Democrats to drop out of the 2024 presidential race in the wake of his dismal debate performance last month.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, on July 2 became the first to call on the president to withdraw, but more have followed since then. On July 10, Sen. Peter Welch of Vermont became the first Democratic senator to say Biden should drop out of the race, calling it "for the good of the country."
Still, other lawmakers have defended the president, including members of the Congressional Black Caucus.
In a letter on July 8 to Democrats on Capitol Hill, Biden insisted he was staying in the race, saying that "the voters have spoken."
