U.S. Women's Basketball Escapes With Win Over France In Olympic Final

The U.S. women’s basketball team barely averted a monumental upset to defeat France in the Paris Olympics final on Sunday.

Team USA won, 67-66, to capture its eighth straight gold medal and 61st straight victory in the Olympics.

A’ja Wilson bailed out the Americans with 21 points and 13 rebounds.

France’s Gabby Williams seemingly made a 3-pointer to tie the game for the host country at the buzzer, but it was ruled a 2 because she was over the line.

France, led by Williams’ 19 points, gave the Americans a scare like they’ve rarely experienced in their winning streak. Just two of their previous victories were by single digits.

The champs now stand alone in U.S. basketball history by beating the previous record of seven consecutive golds in the Olympics by the men’s team from 1936-68.

The women’s team’s narrow triumph also marked an important farewell.

Diana Taurasi, the 42-year-old American superstar, didn’t play on Sunday, but she closed out her storied Olympics career with her sixth gold medal.
