Trump Says He And Harris Have Agreed To Mic Terms Ahead Of Sept. 10 Debate
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump claimed Tuesday that he and his Democratic rival Kamala Harris have agreed to terms for their upcoming Sept. 10 debate, including muting their microphones when it’s not their turn turn to speak.
Harris’ campaign had pushed to have their microphones stay live the whole time, believing that the more voters hear from Trump, the less they like him.
Trump’s camp apparently agreed with that logic and argued for cutting the mics off.
In a social media post, Trump said the microphones would be muted ― just as they were during the June 27 debate he had with President Joe Biden.
Trump said the two will also stand up the whole time, cannot bring notes, and have been given assurances by ABC that neither will be given the questions in advance.
Trump couldn’t resist the urge to aim invective at the network in his post, calling it “by far the nastiest and most unfair newscaster in the business.”
Harris’ campaign didn’t immediately respond when asked to confirm Trump’s assertions.
“Our understanding is that Trump’s handlers prefer the muted microphone because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own,” Harris campaign spokesperson Brian Fallon said of the proposed restriction earlier this week.
“We suspect Trump’s team has not even told their boss about this dispute because it would be too embarrassing to admit they don’t think he can handle himself against Vice President Harris without the benefit of a mute button.”
