Today in Politics: PM Modi heads to Italy for G7 Summit; Pema Khandu to take oath as Arunachal CM for third term
With the Lok Sabha elections getting completed and the new Council of Ministers in place, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is turning his focus to foreign policy now.
PM Modi will head to Italy on Thursday to attend the G7 leaders’ Summit in what will be his first trip abroad after assuming charge as the PM for the third term.
Modi, accompanied by a high-level delegation, will attend an outreach session at the Summit on June 14.
The G7 comprises the US, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Canada and Japan. Italy is holding the current presidency of the G7 (Group of Seven) and is hosting the Summit in that capacity.
The three-day Summit is expected to be dominated by the wars in Ukraine and Gaza.
Foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra said at a media briefing Wednesday that India will raise the consequences of the conflicts, including their impact on food, fuel and fertiliser availability, challenges to global supply chains and disruptions in the global economy. He added that India will also raise the specific challenges faced by the Global South.
The foreign secretary said the PM’s participation in the G7 Summit would also provide a timely opportunity to follow up on outcomes of the G20 Summit held under India’s presidency last year.
Modi is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other leaders.
On Thursday, Pema Khandu is set to take oath as the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh for the third consecutive term after he was unanimously elected as the BJP Legislature Party leader at a meeting in Itanagar on Wednesday.
