School bus driver charged after 5 children injured in rollover near Woodstock, Ont.

The 34-year-old driver of a bus that crashed south of Woodstock, Ont., on Tuesday, leaving five children with minor injuries, has been charged.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday, police confirmed the driver, identified only as a resident of Oxford County, has been charged with careless driving causing bodily harm and is due in a Woodstock court on April 18.

The single vehicle crash on Cuthbert Road and Dodge Line in South-West Oxford, about 10 kilometres south of Woodstock, occurred at roughly 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The rollover crash resulted in one child pinned beneath the bus. That child was airlifted to a hospital in London while four other children were taken to a local hospital.

All five students, including the child who was airlifted, were determined to have minor injuries, Const. Randi Crawford said.

Crawford and Sgt. Ed Sanchuk also extended their thanks to Good Samaritans who helped evacuate the children off the bus.

“We’d also like to let the families know that we’re thinking of them and if they have any help that they need to help the children or themselves deal with this, we’re happy to get them the resources that they need,” Crawford added.

The crash resulted in road closures in the area for roughly six hours Tuesday.
