Rep. Joe Wilson Is Hospitalized

Representative Joe Wilson, Republican of South Carolina, was taken to a hospital on Tuesday, according to a social media post.

A post on Mr. Wilson’s official social media account confirmed that he experienced a medical emergency.

“Congressman Joe Wilson (R-SC) was taken ill and is being evaluated at a local hospital in Washington, DC.,” the post said.

Alan Wilson, Joe Wilson’s son and the attorney general of South Carolina, said in a separate post on Tuesday night that he had spoken with his mother, who was at the hospital, and that “doctors have confirmed to us that he has experienced stroke-like symptoms.”

Mr. Wilson, 77, came to prominence after shouting “you lie” at President Barack Obama during a joint session of Congress in 2009. The eruption was seen by many as a breach of protocol, and the behavior of Mr. Wilson, who apologized to the president personally and in an official statement, was criticized by members of both parties.

Mr. Wilson is running for re-election against David Robinson, a Democrat, to represent the conservative central South Carolina district that first elected him to office in December 2001. He is a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and also serves on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Committee on Education and the Workforce.
