NYC police commissioner resigns amid nightclub probe involving twin brother

UPDATE: New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced the resignation of the city’s police commissioner in a press conference Thursday, a week after sources leaked news that the top law enforcement official was under federal investigation.

Edward Caban, the first Latino police commissioner in the city’s history, had his phone seized last week by the FBI, sources told multiple news outlets. His twin brother James, who runs a nightclub security business, is also under federal investigation.

Sources told NBC and CBS News that investigators are probing whether James was paid by bars and clubs in Manhattan to arrange special treatment from police, smoothing over noise complaints and other violations, using his ties to the former commissioner.

Mayor Adams appointed Tom Donlon as the interim police commissioner of the New York City Police Department. As a retired FBI official, Donlon joins the NYPD from outside its ranks.

ORIGINAL: New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban said he would resign Thursday, one week after it emerged that his phone was seized as part of a federal investigation that touched several members of Mayor Eric Adams’ inner circle.

Caban said he made the decision to resign after the “news around recent developments” had “created a distraction for our department,” according to an email to the police department obtained by The Associated Press.

“I am unwilling to let my attention be on anything other than our important work, or the safety of the men and women of the NYPD,” he added.

It was not immediately clear who will replace Caban as police commissioner. Inquiries to the police department were not returned.
