Nayab Singh Saini elected new Haryana Chief Minister, thanks PM Narendra Modi in tweet

Hours after the senior BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar and his entire cabinet stepped down, Nayab Singh Saini will be the new Chief Minister of Haryana, the party said Tuesday afternoon. He is likely to be sworn in at 5 pm today. 

Nayab to X and thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, party president JP Nadda and others after being chosen for the post.

Later Nayab Saini met Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatraya and staked claim to form the government in the state. 

Nayab Saini is the BJP's Lok Sabha MP from Kurukshetra and is an influential figure within the OBC, or Other Backward Classes. He was appointed the party's state boss in October 2023.

He was selected as Haryana CM following a meeting of the BJP's legislative party, attended by Agriculture Minister Arjun Munda and National General Secretary Tarun Chugh.

According to details, in the 90-member Haryana Assembly, the BJP has 41 MLAs. The BJP also has the support of 5 independent MLAs and the Haryana Lokhit Party MLA Gopal Kanda.

Earlier in the day, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar resigned from the state Chief Minister following the BJP alliance with the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) broke. The JJP led by Deputy CM Dushyant Chautala had 10 MLAs in the Haryana Assembly. Khattar submitted his resignation letter to Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya.
