Labour Win Portsmouth North To Defeat Cabinet Minister Penny Mordaunt

Leader of the House Penny Mordaunt has lost to Labour in Portsmouth North, making her the latest Cabinet minister to lose their seat in the 2024 General Election.

Labour candidate Amanda Martin will now replace her as the MP for Portsmouth North after securing 14,495 votes versus Mordaunt's 13,715, a majority of 780 with a turnout of 58 per cent.

The result in the south of England is another scalp for Labour who last won the seat in 2005. Prior to the result Labour were confident of winning the seat, which has been a bellwether and elected the party which has gone on to form the Government since 1974.

Mordaunt's majority in the seat in 2019 was 15,780 after she increased it by more than 13 per cent. The loss of her seat demonstrates the collapse in Conservative support at this years election.

Other cabinet ministers vulnerable to losing their seat in the early hours of Friday morning include Chancellor Jeremy Hunt.

Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, Justice Secretary Alex Chalk, and Education Secretary Gillian Keegan have already lost their seats.
