JD Vance is now the least popular vice presidential candidate in modern history – even below Sarah Palin, according to polling averages collated by FiveThirtyEight.

Donald Trump’s running mate has a net unfavorable rating of -9 per cent on average, with 33 per cent of voters viewing him favorably and 42 per cent unfavorably.

This iseven lower than 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s popularity, ending at -2 per cent, according to ABC news and FiveThirtyEight.

Palin had a catastrophic fall in popularity when running alongside John McCain; peaking at +21 favorability in August shortly after being chosen, before plummeting by 23 per cent, to -2 disapproval.

Vance has seen less of a drop, since he already started from an unpopular position, at net disapproval of -3 on average.

Yet his popularity has only continued to fall, with several controversial outbursts leaving him with the lowest average favorability rating for any candidate (-9).

Meanwhile, Democratic VP choice Tim Walz is coming from a stronger position.

On average, he has had a net positive approval rating since being chosen to join Kamala Harris on the ticket on August 6, and his net favorability now stands at +4.7 per cent according to FiveThirtyEight data.

In fact, a new poll from Emerson College (up to August 14) shows that Harris may have the highest popularity of all current candidates for election, while both Trump and Vance have susbtantially high disapproval rates at -10 per cent.

In this poll, Walz is tied at neutral favorability, though on average his favorability has been poisitive.
