Ilhan Omar’s daughter claims she has been left homeless and hungry after being suspended from Columbia over pro-Palestine protests

Congresswoman Ilhan Omar's daughter said she has been left homeless and hungry since she was reportedly suspended from Barnard College for participating in protests related to Israel's war in Gaza.

Isra Hirsi, Ms Omar's daughter, said she and two of her classmates from Barnard were the first of nearly 100 students protest Israel's war in Gaza to be suspended following the protest.

Ms Hirsi made the comments in Teen Vogue.

Students from Columbia and Barnard opposed to the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza gathered on Wednesday to form an «encampment» on Columbia's south lawn.

On Thursday morning — approximately 24 hours after the encampment was formed — Ms Hirsi and approximately one hundred others were arrested when Columbia President Minouche Shafik authorised the NYPD to forcibly shut down the demonstration.

“We had so many people who were born female in our group that they didn’t have enough space for us. It was a very slow process in getting everybody into the cells,” Ms Hirsi told the magazine.

She said police kept her zip-tied for approximately seven hours and that she was released after eight hours in custody.

Ms Hirsi was suspended for participating in the protest, which meant her building access was shut off, locking her out of her on-campus housing, and all of her possessions within.

“I was a little bit frantic, like, where am I going to sleep? Where am I gonna go? And also all of my s*** is thrown in a random lot. It’s pretty horrible,” she said. “I don't know when I can go home, and I don’t know if I ever will be able to.”

In addition to living at the dorms, she also ate a majority of her meals at the campus’s dining hall.
