DeSantis fury after Trump is projected Iowa caucus winner before some even started voting

Ron DeSantis’s campaign accused the media of “election interference” for projecting Donald Trump as the winner of the Iowa caucuses while voting was still taking place on Monday evening.

The Associated Press and other news organisations projected Mr Trump as the clear victor of the first contest in the Republican primary campaign just 30 minutes after voting began, with over 50 per cent of the vote.

At the time of writing, Mr DeSantis was running second with around 20 per cent, while Nikki Haley was close behind in third.

«It is absolutely outrageous that the media would participate in election interference by calling the race before tens of thousands of Iowans even had a chance to vote,” the campaign’s communications director, Andrew Romeo, said in a statement.

“The media is in the tank for Trump and this is the most egregious example yet,» he added.

DeSantis campaign manager James Uthmeier slammed the “appalling” decision by the media to call the race before all votes were cast.

“I personally spoke in multiple precincts and while I’m presenting and delivering the closing argument for Ron DeSantis and actually flipping voters, people start getting alerts on their phones saying the race is over,” he told NBC News. “One guy said ‘why do we even bother voting, if it’s already over?’ That is absurd.”

He continued: “That challenges the very tenets of our Republican democracy. And that should not happen. We still expect a good night. I know, you know, it’s going to take a while for votes to come in. But you can’t taint the process like that, having a victory declared before people have even voted before arguments have been heard. That’s not right.”
