Biden and Harris speaks to campaign staff a day after Democratic ticket shakeup: Live updates

President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have addressed campaign staff in Wilmington, Delaware after Sunday’s shakeup on the Democratic ticket following the president’s announcement that he’s stepping aside as the Democratic nominee.

“I know yesterday’s news was surprising and, it was hard for you to hear, but it was the right thing,” Biden told the campaign team remotely on Monday as he recovers from Covid-19 at his house in Rehoboth Beach.

Harris has said that she plans to “earn and win” the Democratic nomination, and so far, no major challengers have emerged.

In fact, in just 24 hours since being endorsed by Biden, Harris’s campaign has raised a record-breaking $81m.

According to the newly-rebranded Harris for President campaign, that eye-popping sum “reflects money raised across the campaign, Democratic National Committee, and joint fundraising committees,” and includes 888,000 grassroots donors, a full 60 percent of whom gave for the first time this cycle.

Several of the party’s top bankrollers had threatened to withdraw funding in recent weeks over concerns about Biden’s ability to compete against Donald Trump following his disastrous debate performance last month.
