WITH THE return of the Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) to its ranks, the NDA hopes to have a repeat performance as in 2019, when it had won 39 of the state’s 40 Lok Sabha seats. The Congress won the remaining single seat.
The Lok Sabha polls in West Bengal will be held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, across 42 constituencies. The first phase of the elections in the state will kick off in north Bengal on April 19, while Kolkata will vote in the final phase on June 1.
WHILE THERE are several issues which are expected to play out in the coming Lok Sabha polls, it may boil down to a fight between ‘Modi Ki Guarantee’ vs Congress’s ‘Nyay’ guarantees.
The first general elections were held between October 1951 and May 1952, featuring a three-tiered process for the election of the President and Vice-President, members of the Lower Houses at the Centre and in the States, and the members of the Upper Houses. For the second general elections, the Election Commission (EC), after holding consultations, recommended the dissolution of the Assemblies of a handful of states so that the second general elections to the Lok Sabha and the state Assemblies could be held together.
Among the first-time candidates that the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has fielded for the Lok Sabha elections is 42-year-old academic and former journalist Shahnawaz Ali Raihan who faces the tough task of helping the party win a seat that the Congress’s Abu Hasem Khan Choudhury, the brother of former Union Minister A B A Ghani Khan Choudhury, has held since 2009.
WITH the Congress keeping its hopes up regarding an alliance with the Trinamool Congress, till the party dashed the same and unveiled names for all the 42 Lok Sabha seats in West Bengal on Sunday, the grand old party is still to work out a seat-sharing arrangement with its partner Left. This is even as the BJP too has released nearly half the names from its list.
Both the BJP and the Congress’s central election committees are expected to meet on Monday to deliberate on the second list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls.
Named in the Congress’s first list of candidates for the Lok Sabha polls, its former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, who was expected to re-deliver Chhattisgarh to the party in last year’s Assembly polls but failed, is now staring at an uphill task. The party has fielded Baghel from the Rajnandgaon Lok Sabha seat, a BJP bastion for more than three decades, and seen as the turf of its former three-time CM Raman Singh.
