Senior Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia’s statement criticising his party for taking a “political decision” to skip the Ram Temple inauguration in Ayodhya on January 22 has caused embarrassment for the party, which has been struggling in state politics for many years.
As seat-sharing talks between the Congress and other parties of the INDIA bloc gather pace, the heads of 14 major parties of the alliance will hold a virtual meeting on Saturday to decide on appointing a convener for the coalition. The Janata Dal (United) has been mounting pressure on the grouping to appoint Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as the convener.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge was appointed as the chairperson of the Opposition INDIA alliance at its virtual meeting here on Saturday. The INDIA bloc also picked Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) president Nitish Kumar as its convener, but he has “temporarily chosen to withdraw from the alliance’s convener race on the ground that he would only accept it if there is a consensus among allies,” sources told The Indian Express.
Even as the Congress on Friday again hit out at the BJP for turning the Ayodhya Ram Temple inauguration into a “political event”, senior party leader Karan Singh said that after the Supreme Court’s 2019 judgment in the Ram Janmabhoomi case “there should be no hesitation in attending the function, if invited”.
FOR the past fortnight, Janata Dal (United) leaders had been pushing for Bihar Chief Minister and party supremo Nitish Kumar to be made national convener of the INDIA bloc. Yet, when the offer came, from the Congress Saturday, Nitish’s no wasn’t much of a surprise.
