With the INDIA bloc nominating the Congress’s Kodikunnil Suresh, the MP from Kerala’s Mavelikkara, the stage is set for a rare contest for the Lok Sabha Speaker’s post. The ruling NDA earlier renominated BJP MP Om Birla for Speaker.
Claiming had not been“consulted”, the Trinamool Congress Tuesday kept the Congress on the tenterhooks over supporting the INDIA candidate for the Lok Sabha Speaker’s post. The Congress, however, claimed it had placed a call to the TMC before announcing that its MP Kodikunil Suresh would take on the BJP’s Om Birla for the Speaker’s post.
Parliament is headed for arare election to the Speaker’s post after talks between the government and the Opposition on the issue failed. While the Narendra Modi government has renominated Kota MP Om Birla, the Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha, the Opposition has decided to field K Suresh, the eight-time MP from Mavelikkara in Kerala.
The government and Opposition are locked in a faceoff after the ruling NDA decided to renominate BJP MP Om Birla for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker while not deciding on the post of Deputy Speaker. The Opposition responded by fielding Congress MP from Kerala Kodikunnil Suresh for the post of Speaker, setting the stage for a rare contest for the high office.
The stage is set for the ruling BJP-led NDA to announce its candidate for the Speaker of the 18th Lok Sabha on Tuesday, which would see the filing of nomination for the key post.
