Ever since the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) was ousted from power in Punjab in 2017 after two successive terms at the helm, its president Sukhbir Singh Badal has been facing dissension in the party. During this period, a section of Akali Dal leaders have periodically questioned Sukhbir’s leadership as well as the Badal family’s control over the party.
Last week, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal condemned the extension of Amritpal Singh’s detention under the National Security Act (NSA) by one year. The radical preacher Amritpal recently won the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha seat as an Independent while being in Dibrugarh jail in Assam.
“Ye Ravneet Bittu mera dost hai, paanch saal se dost bana hai mera. Ye Ravneet Bittu ko Ludhiana se Dilli ki sansad mein bhejiye, isko bada aadmi banane ka kaam main karunga (Ravneet Bittu is my friend. He has been my friend for the past five years. Vote for him and send him to Parliament and it is my responsibility to make him a big man),” former Union Home Minister Amit Shah said at a rally in Ludhiana in Punjab on May 26.
THE CONGRESS looks set for a big win in Punjab, leading in seven out of 13 Lok Sabha seats. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), an ally of the Congress at the national level as part of INDIA, is ahead in three seats.
The Lok Sabha elections in Punjab are likely to throw up two Independent winners, causing much consternation because of their so-called radical ideology.

Sarabjeet Singh Khalsa, the 45-year-old son of Beant Singh, one of the two assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, is a regular contender in Punjab elections. This time, he has entered the fray as an Independent from the Scheduled Caste-reserved Faridkot Lok Sabha seat with the 2015 Guru Granth Sahib desecration case as his primary campaign plank.

Many might know, many others may not as it is the first time I am contesting an election from Ludhiana),” Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring aptly sums up his upcoming battle for the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat as he introduces himself to a group of morning walkers in the city’s upscale Civil Lines area.
