The Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, consecrated in January, marked the completion of one of the Sangh Parivar’s ideological goals and was initially expected to boost the BJP’s prospects in the Lok Sabha elections. But as the party took a big hit in Uttar Pradesh, with its tally almost halved, one of its most prominent losses was in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency of which Ayodhya is a part.
The BJP may be banking big on the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya under the Modi government for the coming Lok Sabha elections, raising it at poll meetings. But Arun Govil, the ‘Ram’ in the race, appears to believe that God alone won’t see him through in Meerut; he is also counting on Narendra Modi and Yogi Adityanath.
In early January, the Congress high command decided that three of its senior leaders — Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury — would skip the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya later that month. Though the party did not issue a diktat against its party workers and leaders attending the event, the political fallout of the decision has seen it make concerted efforts since then to ensure it is not seen as “anti-Ram” even at the risk of isolating ally Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh. And this has also left its state unit divided.
The Budget Session of Parliament concludes on Saturday, with both Houses set to pass a resolution thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for overseeing the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, which was inaugurated on January 22. A long-held ideological goal of the BJP, the temple is expected to play a major role in the party’s messaging for the coming Lok Sabha elections.
Given the scale of the celebrations around the Ram Temple inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Ayodhya is set to be the ruling BJP’s major plank in the coming Lok Sabha polls. However, on the road from Delhi to Ayodhya in the run-up to the consecration shows that while the Temple will be a deciding factor for a large section of the electorate, for many, it will be one of several issues, with caste still a big determinant.
AS THE RAM Temple consecration was being held in Ayodhya Monday, the Tamil Nadu government found itself facing allegations at home and in courts over alleged attempts to stop devotees from celebrating the event.
