The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) not only made a clean sweep in all the 29 Lok Sabha seats in Madhya Pradesh, it even wrested former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Kamal Nath’s stronghold, Chhindwara, which has remained elusive for the ruling party for decades.
The BJP bettered its sweep of Madhya Pradesh in 2019 by picking up the sole seat it had lost in 2019, the bastion of former chief minister and veteran Congress leader Kamal Nath. His son Nakul Nath lost from Chhindwara to the BJP’s Bunty Vivek Sahu by a margin of over 1 lakh votes.
Even as the Congress made gains in the Hindi heartland states of Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress was completely swept away in Madhya Pradesh where it failed to win a single constituency for the first time in the state’s history.
The Congress’s appeal to people to cast their vote for NOTA in Indore, after its candidate pulled out at the last minute and later joined the BJP, appears to have hit home. Midway through counting, NOTA votes in the seat stood at 1.28 lakh votes.
Congress leader and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath, whose bastion Chhindwara seems to be slipping away from his party this time, said Tuesday that he accepted the “decision of the people”.
