Scuttling between locations across her constituency, having meals with party workers and lending a keen ear to the people’s issues are some things that three-time Bathinda Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal has been doing on a daily basis over the past few weeks despite not being formally announced as the party’s candidate from the seat.
“The new BJP is the old Congress in Punjab,” said a BJP insider as three-time Congress MP Ravneet Singh Bittu, grandson of former chief minister Beant Singh, switched on Tuesday to the BJP, which now has a host of ex-Congress leaders among its ranks. Bittu has been a close aide of Rahul Gandhi.
Preneet Kaur, suspended Congress MP and wife of former Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, will formally join the BJP on Thursday, and is set to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from the family’s pocketborough of Patiala as the BJP candidate.
Punjab BJP leader Jai Inder Kaur (57), daughter of two-time Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh and four-time Patiala MP Preneet Kaur, is set to play a pivotal role for the party in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. A royal family scion, she started her political innings after joining the BJP in September 2022 along with her father, after his unceremonious removal from the CM’s post and bitter exit from the Congress in 2021. Jai Inder is now the state BJP’s Mahila Morcha president and the only woman in the recently announced 19-member state election committee.
The BJP got a reprieve on the farmer front the past few days, with the protesters having called a pause. However, with no end to the agitation in sight yet as the farmers meet again Thursday, the party may find it harder to continue riding two boats, as it has been doing – in Punjab, supporting the farmers; and in Haryana, defending its government’s crackdown against them.
