A NEW STANDOFF is underway between the ruling Trinamool Congress and Governor in West Bengal – this time over the swearing-in of two MLAs of the party who won in recent bypolls.
The TMC is likely to support the candidature of Kodikunil Suresh for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker during the election on Wednesday, sources close to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee told The Indian Express.
Claiming had not been“consulted”, the Trinamool Congress Tuesday kept the Congress on the tenterhooks over supporting the INDIA candidate for the Lok Sabha Speaker’s post. The Congress, however, claimed it had placed a call to the TMC before announcing that its MP Kodikunil Suresh would take on the BJP’s Om Birla for the Speaker’s post.
“The winner comes second.”
Upbeat after the election results, a resurgent Opposition is coordinating its moves to mount pressure on the BJP-led NDA government to keep in abeyance the three laws that have been enacted to replace the Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure, and the Evidence Act. The parties are also gearing up to corner the government on the NEET and UGC-NET controversies next week as the 18th Lok Sabha meets for the first time.
From managing the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal to holding talks with other regional parties, Trinamool Congress (TMC) second-in-command Abhishek Banerjee’s image as the party’s national face has received a major boost following the party’s comfortable win in the Lok Sabha elections in West Bengal. It has also helped him cement his position as the party’s biggest leader after his aunt and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, with some in the party even suggesting that he is at par with Mamata now when it comes to running the party.
The INDIA bloc may have decided to wait and watch developments unfolding in the NDA camp and “take appropriate steps at the appropriate time”, but some parties in the Opposition alliance, particularly the TMC and Shiv Sena (UBT), and, to some extent the AAP, are pushing hard for exploring options to shore up the bloc numbers to checkmate the BJP.
Not only did Trinamool Congress (TMC) supremo Mamata Banerjee hold her ground in West Bengal, but her party also made major gains, thereby puncturing the BJP’s plan to breach the TMC’s fortress once again.
