As ministers, new and old, in the third Narendra Modi-led government settle down and the BJP gets on with the business of starting the review of its election performance, there is likely to be a sense of disquiet in the ruling party. And the reason is not the Opposition but something much closer home: the RSS.
In the wake of the Lok Sabha elections, decks have been cleared in Uttar Pradesh for by-elections to 10 Assembly seats across the state. Nine of these seats were vacated as their incumbent MLAs quit to retain the Lok Sabha constituencies they won in the recent polls. The remaining one, Sishamau, was vacated following the disqualification of its SP MLA Irfan Solanki.
While taking oath in the Lok Sabha earlier this week, Awadhesh Prasad, the newly-elected Samajwadi Party MP from Faizabad, invoked ‘Veerangana’ Uda Devi and ‘Maharaja’ Bijli Pasi, two prominent personalities of the Pasi (Dalit) community. Prasad himself belongs to the Pasi community, who number over three lakh in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency and who are believed to have voted en masse to elect him over his BJP opponent.

Buoyed by the success of their tie-up in Uttar Pradesh in the recent Lok Sabha polls, the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) are ready to walk the extra mile and continue their bonhomie in the coming days, aiming to become “a force and a stronger Opposition” against the BJP.
Days after registering its best-ever Lok Sabha poll performance in Uttar Pradesh, winning 37 out of 80 seats, the Samajwadi Party (SP) is now grappling with the problem of choosing a new Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Assembly.
The Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, consecrated in January, marked the completion of one of the Sangh Parivar’s ideological goals and was initially expected to boost the BJP’s prospects in the Lok Sabha elections. But as the party took a big hit in Uttar Pradesh, with its tally almost halved, one of its most prominent losses was in the Faizabad Lok Sabha constituency of which Ayodhya is a part.
Between the figure of 295 Lok Sabha seats now being bandied about by almost every Opposition leader, to the dizzying lows projected by exit polls, lies the real hope and expectation of the INDIA bloc. Despite the bravado, the Opposition realises that stopping the BJP from scoring a hat-trick would be a tough task. What they are looking for are green shoots of recovery in some states, particularly those scheduled to go to Assembly elections later this year and in the near future.
