DESPITE several measures to reach out to tribals in Jharkhand, the BJP was not able to win any of the five Scheduled Tribe-reserved seats in the state. In four of these, its margin of defeat was over 1.2 lakh votes.
Even though the BJP in Jharkhand is leading in eight Lok Sabha seats out of 14, senior party leader and Union minister Arjun Munda is trailing by more than one lakh votes from his Khunti constituency, a Scheduled Tribes (ST)- reserved seat.
Tribal icon Birsa Munda’s village of Ulihatu in Jharkhand’s Khunti Lok Sabha constituency has newly-tarred roads, schools and drinking water supply in most homes. It has been visited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu, and the freedom fighter’s birthday, on November 15, has been designated as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas (Tribal Pride Day)’.
As Jharkhand’s Dumka Lok Sabha seat gets set to vote in the seventh and final phase of polling on June 1, there would be several “missing” electors in the families of migrant labourers across the constituency – including Maikil Marandi, Ravinder Rai, Bhairo Mirdha, Mahtab Ansari and Salamat Ansari, who died while working in different parts of the country in recent years.
At 7.45 pm, a motorcade of 10-12 cars enters Karaun area, which falls under the Godda Lok Sabha seat, as a loudspeaker blares the BJP’s “Ab ki baar, 400 paar” slogan. Seated in a white luxury car is sitting BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, who is surrounded by supporters as soon as he alights from the vehicle.
In all the seven seats in Jharkhand that had voted till May 20, the turnout among women outnumbered the men in each. Of the 39 Assembly segments that fall within the seven Lok Sabha seats – half of Jharkhand’s total 14 – only in three was the polling participation of men higher.
“Hamara naam kis liye suna hai? Jhooth bolne wala nahi, na? Hum logon ke liye bhid jaane wale hain, chahe sarkar koi rahe, CM, PM koi rahe (Why have you heard my name? Not for telling lies, right? I fight for the people irrespective of the government and whoever is the CM or PM).”
The birthplace of Adivasi icon Birsa Munda, Ulihatu – a village in the Khunti Lok Sabha constituency of Jharkhand – the development in recent years is visible. Freshly tarred roads, new schools and water tanks are among the examples. In addition to the new infrastructure, visits by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who launched the Rs 24,000 crore Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) Development Mission from here, as well as by President Droupadi Murmu have raised the village’s profile. As part of its outreach efforts in the tribal-dominated state, the BJP Central government also christened Birsa Munda’s birth anniversary on November 15 as ‘Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas’.
