Israel-Hamas war live updates: Harris calls for immediate Gaza cease-fire ahead of meeting with Israel’s Gantz

What we knowVice President Kamala Harris is set to meet with Israeli war Cabinet member Benny Gantz at the White House today. After calling for an "immediate cease-fire" in Gaza, Harris criticized the U.S. ally for not doing enough to allow aid into the enclave. She is expected to deliver an equally blunt message to Gantz, who is visiting Washington in defiance of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The U.S. push for a new hostage deal came as talks were ongoing in Egypt to broker a six-week truce before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan begins next week. Israeli media reported that the government did not send a delegation because it is waiting to learn which hostages are alive and how many Palestinian prisoners Hamas seeks in exchange for each of them. The U.S. began a series of aid airdrops into Gaza over the weekend. The first, on Saturday, included about 38,000 meals into southwest Gaza. White House officials have said the airdrops will continue to supplement truck deliveries and they are also working on sending aid via sea. At least 15 children have died in northern Gaza in recent days because of malnutrition and dehydration, local health officials have said.Gaza’s death toll has passed 30,500 , according to the enclave's Health Ministry, amid surging fears of starvation in the north of the territory. The Israeli military officials said that at least 245 soldiers have been killed since the ground invasion of Gaza began.

Vice President Harris calls for cease-fire in Gaza during speech at Bloody Sunday anniversary

Vice President Kamala Harris called for a cease-fire in Gaza Sunday while commemorating the anniversary of Bloody Sunday, the day law enforcement officers attacked Civil Rights activists crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama. Harris gave an 18-minute speech at a gathering on the bridge to recognize the 59th anniversary of Bloody Sunday. On March 7, 1965, officers beat 600 demonstrators with billy clubs and sprayed them with tear gas during a march across the bridge in support of voting rights. Before honoring activists like Amelia Boynton and John Lewis, Harris acknowledged the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war.  Harris condemned Hamas while also calling on the Israel

Israel-Hamas war live updates: Hamas officials arrive in Egypt as cease-fire talks advance

What we knowHamas officials arrived in Cairo today for talks on a cease-fire and hostage deal, the frameowrk for which Israel agreed to in Paris in late February. An Israeli official told NBC News that there was intense U.S. pressure on all sides to reach an agreement by the start of Ramadan, on March 10. Israel has essentially accepted the proposed framework of a Gaza cease-fire if Hamas agrees to release sick, elderly and women hostages, according to a U.S. senior administration official yesterday. The current deal would be more complicated than the earlier cease-fire due to its length, but the six-week deal “has the potential to extend from there.” The U.S. completed its first airdrop of humanitarian aid into Gaza yesterday, delivering 66 pallets of food containing 38,000 meals. The Israeli military welcomed the drop, saying it “makes the fighting possible.” Aid organizations criticized the tactic as “absolutely incomprehensible” and “completely insufficient” for the needs of 2.2 million Gazans, many of whom are facing starvation. Rescuers continue to recover bodies from Nabulsi roundabout in Gaza City, where more than 100 people were killed after Israeli forces opened fire on a crowd of Palestinians hoping to get food. The IDF has confirmed and denied shooting into the crowd, and blamed most of the deaths on a stampede. Aid agencies and health workers said “a large number” of the dead and injured from the aid convoy violence had gunshot wounds. Gaza death toll has passsed 30,400, according to the Health Ministry there, amid surging fears of starvation in the north of the territory. More than 70,300 have been injured, and thousands more are missing and presumed dead. Israeli military officials said at least 242
