Among the thousands of tribal women who attended Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s rally at Silisuan in the Keonjhar Assembly segment on May 19 was Purnima Majhi, a native of Kankadajodi and a self-help group (SHG) member, who admitted she had little interest in the high-pitch electioneering.
At the busy RMC Market Complex at Hinjili in south Odisha, Kiswar Majhi, who runs a tea stall, is dismayed over the “corruption” he encounters at the grassroots and the lack of employment opportunities in the region. However, when it comes to voting on May 20, Majhi admits, his vote will go again to Naveen Patnaik, who has represented the Hinjili constituency since 2000, when he became the Chief Minister.
“We have good schemes for women, elderly people and youngsters. Naveen (Patnaik) babu has taken care of us very well,” says Sharat Kanar, a resident of Kadligarh village in Sambalpur district, who would be the first-time voter in the simultaneous Odisha Assembly (147 seats) and Lok Sabha (21 seats) elections beginning May 13.

The BJD Wednesday announced candidates for five more Lok Sabha seats and 27 more Assembly constituencies, and with this list, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik-led party has now cleared names for 20 of the total 21 parliamentary seats and 99 Assembly segments.
Biju Janata Dal (BJD) veteran and six-time MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has quit the party and joined the BJP. In his resignation letter, Mahtab, who has been representing the Cuttack seat since 1998, said “things had changed” in the functioning of the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD and that he had been “criticised’ for “raising his voice”.
