Barely a third of the 82 turncoats who contested the Lok Sabha polls as the BJP or Congress nominees managed to win their seats in various states across the country.
The BJP last week registered its best-ever parliamentary election result in Kerala, winning its first-ever Lok Sabha seat in the state, with actor Suresh Gopi, the winner from Thrissur, rewarded with a place in the Union Council of Ministers of the new Modi-led government. The party also increased its vote share from 13% to 16.68%. State BJP president K Surendran speaks about the party’s performance and the road ahead. Excerpts:
Questions hover over the future of Sajad Lone’s Peoples Conference, Altaf Bhukari’s Apni Party, and Ghulam Nabi Azad’s Democratic Progressive Azad Party (DPAP) that were projected as an alternative to “dynastic politics” in Jammu and Kashmir and often labelled as the BJP’s “proxies” after their dismal show in the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls.
The 29-year-old Samajwadi Party (SP) debutant Iqra Choudhary has shot into the limelight after winning the Kairana Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh, where she defeated sitting BJP MP Pradeep Kumar by 69,116 votes.
With the BJP suffering a setback in Uttar Pradesh in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections, the new Union Council of Ministers saw the state’s representation drop from 14 in the outgoing government to nine.
Once dubbed the “accidental Chief Minister” by Karnataka BJP, Mandya MP and JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy will now be among the ministers in the third Narendra Modi-led NDA government. This is the first time Kumaraswamy will be a Central government minister.
The portfolios are yet to come, but the first key takeaway from the new Council of Ministers is the political imperative of a coalition government. This is reflected in the record high of 72 being sworn in on Sunday in the third term of the BJP-led NDA government compared with 45 ministers in 2014 and 57 ministers in 2019.
