Rishi Sunak is being "transparent" about the government's progress in reducing the asylum backlog, his spokesperson has insisted, following accusations that ministers are being misleading about the number of cases dealt with by the Home Office.
The home secretary has rejected claims that the government was wrong to say it has cleared the backlog of older asylum cases — despite new figures showing thousands of cases remain unresolved.
The government says it has delivered one of Rishi Sunak's pledges — to clear the «legacy backlog» of asylum cases — but its own figures published today show there are still more than 4,500 cases in that backlog.
