Getting around 45 per cent of the votes counted till noon Tuesday, the Congress in Karnataka looks to be on track to significantly improve their vote share compared to the 2019 Lok Sabha election, in which they registered just 32 per cent.
Aparajita Ghosh, an HR professional in a French multinational firm, who shuttles between Kolkata and Bangalore, is back in Serampore to cast her vote. Sipping cold coffee at Danish Tavern, the neat little cafe perhaps the only reminder of this Bengal area’s old colonial links to Denmark, she hasn’t warmed up to the BJP’s Vishwaguru campaign. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s foreign trips are a drain on the exchequer and don’t add to much, she says.
Sitting Balurghat MP Sukanta Majumder faces a tough challenge this time with Trinamool Congress (TMC) fielding Cabinet Minister Biplab Mitra against him. At the same time, as the state party president, Majumder is also responsible for planning the BJP’s strategy for the Lok Sabha polls. He speaks to The Indian Express about the party’s strategy in and expectations from the state, CAA, TMC corruption and poll violence. Excerpts:
FROM Prime Minister Narendra Modi to multiple visits by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and state ministers, from former WWE wrestler Khali to actor and its Lok Sabha candidate Kangana Ranaut, and even a “non-political” programme by religious guru Dhirendra Shastri, the BJP is leaving no stone unturned in its bid to ensure the re-election of Union minister Kailash Choudhary from Barmer.
It is the only one of Karnataka’s 28 constituencies that the Congress won in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. This time, the Bangalore Rural constituency in the heart of the state’s agricultural hub is set to witness a high-profile battle between two of the most influential Vokkaliga families — the DK brothers and the Deve Gowda family — even as the BJP-JD(S) faces a tough test.
Bengaluru’s Information Technology (IT) sector, often called India’s Silicon Valley, generates $50 billion in annual revenue. The 18 km IT corridor from the Silk Board junction to KR Puram, spans three Lok Sabha constituencies, including Bangalore South, Central and North. A large section of it falls under the Mahadevapura Assembly segment in the Bangalore Central Lok Sabha constituency, which is represented by three-time BJP MP P C Mohan.
Animated debates, campaigns in parks and along temple paths, and discussions over “by-two coffees” are common sights across the Bangalore South Lok Sabha constituency, where the Congress is facing an uphill battle against the BJP in its stronghold.
